Cohort 9 Outreach in Chemistry Summer School
This year, Cohort 9 assisted with the University of Nottingham’s Chemistry Summer School, part of the Sutton Trust Summer School programme. The event took place in July and lasted for a week.
Eighteen A-Level students attended and participated in four different lab activities throughout the week. These students underwent an application process and many are considering studying chemistry at the university. The activities, originally designed by Cohort 1 students in 2016, included building aluminium-air batteries and extracting limonene from orange peel. Two or three Cohort 9 students led each activity, providing guidance and support.
These activities offered the students a taste of practical chemistry and helped them understand different research areas within sustainable chemistry. It was also a valuable opportunity for the students to discuss university life with members of Cohort 9.
Overall, it was a fun and rewarding experience for Cohort 9, playing a small part in helping the students decide their next steps after A-Level study. Special thanks to Sam Tang for her help in organising the sessions
