From the 6th to the 11th of September, Ben Millwater (cohort 10) had the opportunity to attend the 38th European Peptide Symposium in Vienna, Austria. The conference discussed a wide range of topics relating to the world of peptide chemistry. Talks ranged from new synthetic peptide methodology to computational tools for the development of new bioactive peptides, alongside many other fascinating areas in between! The standout talk was given by David Baker, recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, titled “Design of new protein functions using deep learning”. Alongside the insightful talks, Ben presented a poster describing his PhD research titled “Regioselective halogenation of tryptophan-containing peptides and non-native aromatic substrates”, which looks at the development of new biocatalysts with potential applications in synthetic chemistry. The poster session provided the perfect platform to network with researchers from across the world, receive feedback on his work, and facilitated many insightful conversations relating to potential new research directions.
